Men's Menstrual Cycle

 08.31.2022

Oh, that's right. We don't have them.

Some men, typically younger, don't really realize the whole menstrual struggle that most girls/young ladies/women are tasked with enduring on the regular.

Personally, although I've been guilty of teasing about it, I know that it's no pleasure cruise. The marketplace adapted well to the importance of catering to our females during my lifetime, though. For that, I am thankful.

Just imagine a few of the possible "typical" scenarios that lots of females contend with during their periods. Cramping. Water retention. Mood swings. Irritability. Bloating. Headaches. IBS. Tender breasts. Weight gain. Food cravings. Muscle aches. Joint pain. Lower back pain. Trouble sleeping. Low energy & fatigue.

And what about low iron? I wish I had a nickel for every time I saw a willing female blood donor that was turned away at the Red Cross due to low iron.

Men, try to be supportive when it's that time of the month for females. But don't expect our ladies to advertise or complain, because they don't want to be a burden to others with this naturally occurring phenomenon. They know it's just part of it. But be aware and be compassionate, for fuck sake. Like you would want people to be to you if it was your own regular gig. And if you're ever asked to run to the store to assist in picking up feminine products, don't you dare hesitate. Refer to the typical symptoms above. Then, do yourself a favor and memorize them.

The human aspect of our world often gets lost in the big mix of things. Remember, we owe our women a lot, despite what the current political landscape may suggest.

Free gentle hugs are usually a welcome show of support. Or flowers. Or taking on tasks that are usually not on your list of things to do. Make their days just a little easier during these cycles. #becausewomen

"I Am My Mother's Savage Daughter"

 08.30.2022

So many of you out there, and thank goodness. As a Feminist, I have so much respect for your journeys, your struggles, your voices.

Serena. My gosh. Super Woman. The GOAT. Such a remarkable woman. To realize, just for a moment, her accomplishments is almost unbelievable. I've always been in awe of her and her abilities.

Seems fitting that her last tournament would be in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Remember him? The winner of the inaugural 1968 US Open. The first Black man to win multiple titles, he was a machine! He was playing tennis from the age of 6, and was competing long before a Black man could compete in an "integrated" sport. Salute, sir.

Now, back to Serena, a woman in her 40s, completing today at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Just these names take me back to when these were names you heard daily. But today, Serena, after winning her first Grand Slam singles @ 17 years old, has since won 22 more for a total of 23. Really?

Really. A 4 time Olympic Gold Medalist. A small glimpse of career highlights:

Singles

Career record

856–154 (84.8%)

Career titles

73 (5th in overall rankings)

Highest ranking

No. 1 (July 8, 2002)

Grand Slam singles results

Australian Open

W (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017)

French Open

Wimbledon

W (2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016)

US Open

I'll stop here, but this is far from all of her accomplishments. My big takeaway is this...

Strong woman. Mom. Tennis great. Philanthropist. Role model. Humanitarian. Badass. Savage daughter. She who is to be revered.

Proactive vs Reactive

 08.28.2022

It's gettin' real, folks. Temperatures. Sea levels. Wildfires. Floods. Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Tropical depressions. Heat waves. Droughts. Crop failures. But we keep on drilling, allowing the same industrial polluters to  slowly make moves to follow rules created to protect us, but the poison we allow to take place is so vast. It's gone on so long. I know, the economics of business will always be factors. Thank goodness for those that have been able to move in a proactive way to keep their business alive while doing all the right things for our environment. It's pretty important.

But those that are just beginning to be reactive, though. Is it too late? Am I so unaware by thinking it may be too late? It's just that, following the science, we best get a move on. Like other countries. We are woefully behind.

So, I'll wrap this up by saying that it's not always about the economy. As Yoda would say, "Outside the box we must think".

Please do your part. Recycle. Carpool or ride-share, or use mass transit. Limit fossil fuel use. Conserve water and other natural resources. Talk to folks in your communities and encourage others to plan for their kids & their kid's kids.

Thank you for stopping by.

Still A Believer?

 08.27.2022

Still convinced the GOP should be your choice to support?

Well, I'll be go to hell. Really?

Are you that uninformed? Because if you are, I can help.

I know life can bog us down. I have, since retirement, had time to reflect, study, and also educate myself more than I  ever focused on doing in my life. And I've had plenty of opportunities, but misspent youth was a deterrent. So don't miss yours.

History. It was taught in every grade level I ever attended, but I had little interest. Then. It's a much different story now. For me, it has been having a like minded spouse and becoming a parent. Then, a grandparent. But it never hit me as hard until then. Because I learned to step outside of myself. It's been an eye-opening last 40 years. But I'm proud of my growth, and I hope my parents would be as well. That will always mean a lot to me.

But back to the original question. Still support the GOP? A few points to consider:

  • Gender equality
  • Racial equality
  • Equal opportunities
  • Equal representation
  • Equal rights
  • LGBTQ+ equality
  • Reasonable firearm legislation
  • Health care for all
  • Mental healthcare opportunity
  • Women's healthcare, especially reproductive right to choose
  • Social security stabilization
  • Environmental conscientious
  • Safe, reliable infrastructure
If you align with many or any of these, please support the Blue Tsunami. 🌊#peopleoverpolitics

Birth Certificates

 08.026.2022

I need to see the original birth certificates of the following:

  • Ron Desantis
  • Greg Abbott
  • Lauren Boebert
  • Marjorie Taylor Greene
  • Mitch McConnell
  • Matt Geatz
  • Tim Scott
  • Ted Cruz
  • Rick Scott
  • Rick Perry
  • Jim Jordan
  • Kevin McCarthy
  • Marco Rubio
  • Steve Scalise
  • Mo Brooks
  • Dan Crenshaw
  • Louie Gohmert
  • Paul Gosar
  • Kay Granger
  • Mike Rogers
  • John Thune
  • Roy Blunt
  • Marsha Blackburn
  • Richard Burr
  • Bill Cassidy
  • John Cornyn
  • Susan Collins
  • Tom Cotton
  • Lindsey Graham
  • Bill Hagerty
  • Josh Hawley
  • Cindy Hyde-Smith
  • Ron Johnson
  • John Kennedy
  • Rand Paul
  • Rob Portman
  • Richard Shelby
  • Thom Tillis
  • Pat Toomey
  • Tommy Tuberville
This is round one of my discovery. I just hope there's enough time to see most, if not all of these folks, crash & burn.

I still recall the tension created for then President Obama by the steaming pile of manure that took office in 2016. What a con. No morals, no ethics, so greedy, so selfish, such an ugly punk, lying liar, through & through.

OK, since trump was keen on hanging Vice President Pence, what would be your preference to punish these folks...after a fair trial, of course.

Heckle or publicly demean, in print? What would you say? Remember, many of the above could give a shit about you or yours. Too greedy & self serving. So taking death out of the punishment equation, ideas? Tar & feather? The rack? Shackles? Spray the culprits a darker shade of tan and deny them equal rights? Deport some of them? LOCK THEM UP?

Please share your thoughts. But remember: we aren't them.

Thank you for stopping by.

The coming November

 08.25.2022

As we move closer to Fall and November, a special time for many, I know I for one get so excited. A break from the heat, my nemesis. Voting, camping, and of course, Thanksgiving.

Since voting has been SO very important over the past several cycles, now it's critical. It's also critical we all do our homework so we can see the the obvious paths our country has been led down, and those that facilitated the push down those paths.

I've been told that "I sure post a lot of political crap".

And?

One mans trash, right? It's my hopes, like many with whom I align and follow, that it gets to be a bit much in a progressive way.

I believe in equal opportunities for all. ALL. Yet, for so many, the struggle continues. Why? I mean, it's 2022, man. Are we that insensitive to our fellow men and women?

A resounding yes echoes in my brain and WILL NOT STOP. But why? Because compassion. It's something we all need to thrive. But also, some with compassion never really thrive. Sure, they may think they do, but big picture? Nope. Most love, care, share, give...and maybe lie, condemn, cheat, steal, talk out of both sides of their mouths, all with a smile and a feeling of superiority. So sad, so sickening. If you don't see this by now, you probably never will.

Now's your chance, though, to break out and away from old teachings, old ideals, and peer pressure. To thine own self be true. Free your mind. Take the time to read and learn about your current and future possible politicians. Don't get dragged down by the self seekers, the greedy narcissists, the imposters.

Do.Your.Homework.

Thank y'all for stopping by.

Potable Water

 08.24.2022

Don't want to bore y'all, but I think we all know that not everyone has clean drinking water. But before we get too far, has your community planned for water and our future water needs? Just checking.

Can you think of a time when water conservation was important? HINT: It's now.

From the Mayo Clinic: How much water should you drink each day? It's a simple question with no easy answer.

Studies have produced varying recommendations over the years. But your individual water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are, and where you live.

Pretty much all teens & adults know than a person can't go much longer than 3 days without water on average. Your body depends on water to survive.

It's broadly recommended that an average woman needs to consume about 11 cups a day, and men about 15 cups a day. Variables like size & exercise, sweating, certain food intakes, and climate make a difference. If you're thirsty, drink water. Cold drinks, tea, coffee, and other liquids you consume can add to your daily intake too, but be aware of their detrimental effects. Sugar, alcohol, caffeine, or additives can work against you. Duh.

I had a girlfriend in junior high and she lived less than 2 miles away. I'd ride my 10 speed over there almost every day, and soon as I hot there, the first thing I'd ask for was a glass of water. And I even had a water bottle mounted on my bike. It wasn't long before her dad just called me Camel. I think that after a while, he was convinced that that was my real name. Never called me anything else.

I have a long lived love affair with water. Always by my den chair, on my nightstand, always in a car, or on my toolbox, or in my office. I can't be too far away from a drink of water. I can miss a shower these days, brush my teeth with no water, but what about coffee? I'd freak slap out. So spoiled.

So the Flint, Michigan, water horrors. Some of those stories, mainly hurting our less fortunate folks that struggled to stay above the poverty line, were at the mercy of their own ingenuity, or outside assistance. It's heartbreaking. Those poor folks. Hopefully, things have gotten better for them.

Lake Mead has been in the news lately. It's a pretty big lake, or was. Farmers having to beg for rationed amounts for their crops. People are rationing. The Western States are in a pickle. But don't fool yourself. Remember the Mad Max movies. It can happen anywhere. And I'm only speaking about these United States.

Ok, not trying to be alarmist, but just wagging my finger at those that haven't been paying attention. So please, please, pay attention. What if our precious resource was threatened?

Quiet Quitting

 08.23.2022

So, my early mornings...like before anyone in the house besides me are usually awake...are reserved for my me time. I'm an early riser & always have been. I have time for reflecting, coffee, and the news.

Quiet Quitting has been a talking point lately.

In case you missed it, it's a description of staffers that are stopping doing work that they think is beyond what they were hired to do and not getting compensated for. Employees still excel at their jobs, but they aren't working overtime to do it, said a former engineering consultant. The dramatic workforce shift during the pandemic largely brought on the rise of this behavior, say some. Companies have pushed more responsibilities on employees because some organizations weren't prepared for the pandemic and great resignation. It's mind boggling.  Still, others think it means workers doing the bare minimum at their jobs. I've witnessed all of the above.

People were also frustrated when managers insisted on certain rules like going back to in-person work, which created more burnout and frustration. Like, lots. It seems to be ongoing in my former place of business. A lot of frustration directly associated with the pandemic.

Also, the hiring complexities. Staff have been pushed to "pick up the slack" when other staff members quit, causing much stress. Then, there's those that can see the retirement light at the end of the tunnel, and are negligent in acting in the best interest of the company. So, it's particularly the dedicated, hard working, ultra giving staff that get dumped on. And there in lies a huge problem. Forced away are your work horses with a ton of institutional knowledge. I heard the rumblings prior to my own retirement. "Man, you got out at the right time", many former coworkers said.

Since I've had the ability to observe lots of employee/employer relationships over the last 50 years, my take is this:

* When distressed about your role at work, talk to your immediate supervisor first. That person, by nature of their role, will be your best option. Don't just grumble with coworkers.

* If a solution can't be agreed upon, and you still feel under appreciated or under compensated, focus on your personal responsibilities while conducting a job search.

* If you're working towards a pension or retirement package, think about your next position within the company, or maybe elsewhere.

Remember the important things. Family before finances, health being a priority. Stress is a bonified life threatening issue. Google it. You only have one you.

Hope this provides some clarity. I'm also available for parties and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs (or B'nai/B'nor Mitzvahs).

Thank you for stopping by.

Stranger In A Strange Land

 08.22.2022

Leon Russell. My first rock & roll idol. I thank my sister for access to her 8-Track player & tapes that got me started, and my best friend's sister for the continuum. Between both of our sisters, we were well supplied.

Leon's style and lyrical magic still sticks with me on a daily basis. I had all of his music, and when the Leon Live double tapes came out, I was in heaven. I wore them out. For me, Leon putting lyrics and music to real life issues and situations was a big deal. Before U2, or Black Flag, or Sammy Hagar, or Foo Fighters, and so many more were engrained into my psyche, Leon made me think. And think I did, and do.

"Well I don't exactly know what's going on in the world today, I don't know what there is to say, about the way that people are treating each other, not like brothers..."

Leon Russell and the Shelter People-Stranger In A Strange Land-1971

Really? 50 years ago? Holy Mother Of Guadalupe! I can still picture all the people that jammed to Leon with me in my cars back then. Love and still miss them all.

We can learn a lot through history, even our own. I expect we all reflect on situations and peer interactions from our past. So many lessons learned, admitted regrets, growth, heartache, good times/bad times. (See what I did there?)

Even though I started this blog with the intention of shedding light on my thoughts on our current political environment, I find myself being repetitive. Not my mission. Nor is speaking about my past. So if you follow, please know that my world and my circle is pretty small. It won't always be this way, but for now, it's all about my family  and my feelings. So, apologies. I never mean to offend or bore.

Feel the love, good people.

Oxy & The Epidemic

 08.21.2022

Oxycodone

Brand name: Oxycontin

Main Results:

Descrip

*Narcotic*
It can treat moderate to severe pain.

Controlled substance
High risk for addiction and dependence. Can cause respiratory distress and death when taken in high doses or when combined with other substances, especially alcohol or other illicit drugs such as heroin or cocaine.

Wow.

As a precaution due to my addiction history, I've always asked my doctors, surgeons, and dental surgeons to NOT prescribe oxycodone to me. The stories of oxy preceded my 2012 beginnings into my hip replacements, then elbow surgery, then tibia, fibula, and ribs. Some of these really hurt, as up then, I'd never broken a bone or been hospitalized. Other than when I had my tonsils out in second grade or cut my hand on plate glass. So I never really had any incidents between 1991 after I got sober until the 2012 hip surgeries.

I think it was Percocet or Hydrocodone I was prescribed after my first hip surgery. Whatever it was, I liked it enough to not really want to get off of them. Thankfully, I saw the signs and knew enough to NOT want them for my second hip replacement.

The oxy epidemic is real. In 2020, an average of 44 people died each day from overdoses involving prescription opioids, totaling more than 16,000 deaths. 1 Prescription opioids were involved in nearly 18% of all opioid overdose deaths in 2020, with over a 16% increase in prescription opioid-involved death rates from 2019 to 2020.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), there were 53 million oxycodone prescriptions filled by US pharmacies in 2013. While many of those prescriptions were for legitimate medical use, a large number are diverted onto the black market for sale as recreational opioid drugs.

So if you know of anyone, anywhere, in any position, legitimate or not, please say something. To someone, them or someone that can assist in any way possible. I'd hate to continue to see these stats rise.

Thank you for stopping in.

STFU

 08.20.2022

I try to control my language, and what I say here. But this is hopefully, NOT something to which we can all relate.

Our son was home from work, but gone when I got home after picking up their youngest daughter from Pre-K. She's four. Made her a snack, put on Bluey, and settled in the den. When her Dad got home, she bolted into the kitchen, "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!" I love that. I just love that kid.

She & Daddy bounce in, and she goes to the big ottoman and says, looking down at her doll, "shut the fuck up." I look at our son, we're both bug-eyed, he's quietly laughing with his hand over his mouth. I mouth "shut the fuck up?" He nods.

Our son: "Baby, that's not a nice word." I say, "We don't talk like that, honey."

"Shut the fuck up", with a smile and a giggle. Daddy calls her out one more time, and it's over. Not another peep.

Sponges, kids are. And it lasts for a while. I hope she shakes it off, but it's not likely in times like these. It wasn't for me.

"It's times like these you learn to live again                                It's times like these you give and give again                                    It's times like these you learn to love again                                    It's times like these time and time again".

To Whom I Am Indebted

 08.19.2022

The bricks that built me. Yes, there have been many players. Some I never even realized until years later. Some have already transitioned from their physical beings. Some are in our media that I've never even actually met.

It's said that children learn so many basic things, and retain them, within the first three to seven years of their lives. My research tells of milestones and life lessons.

I was slower to develop my own hard stances and many things of importance.

*Missed opportunities*

But I wasn't too horrible, just unconcerned or "too busy" to let myself be distracted away from mood altering substances, girls, motorcycles, cars...just selfish. I didn't see it then, though.

My family. Even when I get, or have gotten, mad with them, have never wavered. My childhood best friend's family. My married into family. Musicians with poignant messages. Thought provoking authors. Historians. Politicians. Neighbors. At times, everyday people. At other times, it's my own past behaviors that teach me how NOT to be. So again, a big thank you to all that both knowingly and unknowingly helped me reach a (somewhat) respectable level of maturity.

To add a few patient others:

  • Elders
  • Children
  • Teachers, K-12
  • Our son's K-12 teachers
  • Movie/TV Writers, Directors
  • Our LGBTQ+ Brethren
  • Activists
  • Tradesmen & Women
  • Women & Girls in general
  • LEOs
  • Immigrants

  • Scientists
  • Religious leaders
  • Religious zealots
  • Alcoholics & Addicts
  • Outdoorsmen & Women
  • Athlete's
  • Retail salespeople
  • Day laborers
  • Military personnel
This is a pretty good list of my own contributors. I hope you have been as fortunate, but I hope you "got it" quicker than I did. It can be a bumpy road.

The Bible, The Struggle

 08.18.2022

Recent years have made me question several things. I'm not new to the Christianity scene by any means. At 64, I've been afforded lots of opportunities to learn and embrace a variety of opinions. The last several years, however, have me teetering on  my future direction.

First, the Bible. Epic stories, no doubt. Wonderful guidelines. A list of suggestions to live by, mostly all valid in my eyes. But, ever the skeptic, ol' Steve has long had unanswered questions. A few...
  1. Where is Hell?
  2. Is Satan real?
  3. Are the above simply metaphors to keep us in line opposed to boiling infinitely?
  4. Has anyone met Jesus? He's certainly iconic, but...
  5. Has there ever been another immaculate conception since Mary's?
  6. Was Noah an engineering genious and animal whisperer?
  7. Why would God create the Heavens & Earth just to punish us by also creating war evil dictators and machines?
  8. Do things that don't kill us make us stronger?
  9. Why was my elderly maternal grandmother reaped and beaten in her later years, leading to her premature death?
  10. Why did my best friend crash & burn to death in a vehicle accident?
I'll wait.

"You believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, burning bushes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories, and you say that we are the ones that need help?"

Why would false prophets be allowed on our planet? False Gods? Dictators? Lying liars in positions of power? Racists that spread hatred? Discrimination against others? Inequality? Disease? Starvation? Drought?

Again, I'll wait for your response.

The Catholic church, rich in history, steeped in controversy, HUGE following. When we look into the scare tactics (my opinion) and "dont's", I'm not only puzzled, but kinda put out to a point of anger. No offense to believers, but it's just not for me. And fake Christians erk me. So please don't be one.

Thank you for stopping by.

Just One Day

 08.17.2022

If we could go one day...just one day...without hearing anything trump. Bad or good. I know, I'm being unrealistic about the good part.

What we know so far, and what we desire from trump and some others. With the help of one of my mentors, Mark Twain:

  • Even a polished turd is still a turd.
  • If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, pretty good chance it's a grifter...I mean duck.
  • You can run, but you can't hide.
  • If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.
  • Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to reform (or pause and reflect).
  • A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.
  • Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.
  • Loyalty to country ALWAYS. Loyalty to government, when it deserves it.
  • What would men be without women? Scarce, sir...mighty scarce.
  • Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination.
  • You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.
  • If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.
  • Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.
  • Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.
  • Education: the path from cocky ignorance to miserable uncertainty.
Does any of the above resonate with you? I'll wager they do. I think most can read them, but let some, if not all, sink in, just in case.

Liz Cheney is NOT the enemy.😥

The Return Of The Joros

 08.16.2022

I don't recall exactly when I saw the first appearance. Maybe two years ago. But the ones I really noticed were females, larger than the males. Kinda scary looking, but relatively harmless to us humans. Their bites are kinda equated to a bee sting. But, like bees, you don't make a move on them, and they won't need to be defensive. Even though entomologists handle them, I won't be following suit.

Joros help suppress mosquitoes and biting flies, and are one of the few spiders that will catch and eat brown marmorated stink bugs, which are serious pests to many crops.

All three of the above make me a fan of the Joro. Our youngest granddaughter marvels at them, but remains cautious. At 4 years old, she has a healthy no kill policy...most of the time. She admires most insects from a distance, and rightfully so. We've read books on insects and animals to her since before she could talk, or comprehend what we were saying. And there seems to be something that's a natural alarm inside of us that makes us recoil at spiders. In my own youth, walking into a web always startled me. I still get away from one quickly, wondering if the spider is on me, and if so, where is it?

It's a feeling somewhat like being close to a trump supporter, but not as creepy. Or dangerous to others. Give me a Joro any day.

Our insect population will soon disappear for the cooler months, but no such luck with what trump and his supporters have, or will continue to create. Can you imagine more years of this disconnect with reality? The division, negativity, hatred, inequality, anti-woman, lying liars that seem to multiply by the moment? The Joros cover the outside of our house & yard, but it seems like not as rapidly as s the white nationalism and bigotry that has been energized by the recklessness from the former president.

But, like the Joro, don't wish him harm. Just gone away. Like on an island. Or in prison. With his crime family. And his associates.

How did our country allow him to be in control? I'll wait.

Thank y'all for stopping by.

On Tyranny

 08.15.2022

What does tyranny mean in simple terms?

1. An act or the pattern of harsh, cruel, and unfair control over other people.

2. A government in which all power is in the hands of a single ruler.

This is the title of a book I just received. I haven't started it yet, but will this week. I secured a copy before it was banned. The next possible step by our sitting  lawmakers. Damnit, man. Hope I'm wrong.

Do any tyrants come to mind, based on the above definitions?

It's a tricky question for some, I know. But make no mistake about what we've experienced over the last 6 or so years. Even the folks you'd never think would play along to a tyrant may surprise you. They have me.

As November creeps in, please think deeply about your choice at the polls. The freakish, geekish, power hungry options are plenty. Let's weed them out.

Thank you for stopping in.

Lola

 08.14.2022

I've only known one. She was an angel that worked at our local American Red Cross Donor Center. Lola was a very unique woman in that her smile and gentle nature begged you to bond. And we did. Like all the staffers at our American Red Cross service providers, and there are tons, it's more than a job to them.

Like our many dedicated healthcare workers world wide, it seems to be a calling. Remember them, their faces, their compassion, their families, their selflessness, their insane hours. And be thankful for all of them, along with their ability to get up for every shift & do it again.

Remember the first six months, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the traveling doctors and nurses, their mask lines that never seemed to fade. Their multiple shifts in a row. The shortage of staffers out due to pandemic illnesses. They weren't bound by ordinances or mandates that required them to socially distance. No, they double masked & gloved up for YOUR safety. When their shifts finally ended, they undressed at home in garages and laundry rooms and on patios and put their work wear in separate bins to  launder to take the best precautions they could to protect their families. And they never wavered.

Remember your own Lola. Or Doug. Or Shannon. Or Pricilla from Kenya. Or Marie from Haiti. Or Linda. Or Colin. Or Morgan. Or Nacita. Or Jennifer. Or Uncle Chuck. Or Tommy. Or Christie. Or Alyson.

All of my healthcare workers are the hugging type, as am I. They are all special. And this is why whenever I hear or think of "Lola", I think of the army of bone cracking, rib crushing, meaningful hugs doled out to so many by our saviors. It's like licking a stamp to make it stick.

"Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy, but when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine, oh my Lola    la-la-la-la Lola"

The Kinks-Lola-1970

Thankfully, this song transcends the ages, and still gets air time and mentions. Program directors @ radio stations still plug it into playlists, no matter their age. Like so many songs,  Lola is timeless.

So if we cross paths at a healthcare facility and you get short or impatient or huffy with staff, know that defenders of Lola's are everywhere. We won't be silent. Respect Lola.

Rebel Yell

 08.13.2022

The Rebel yell was the war cry of Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Distinctive noises made by soldiers were identified from the very beginning of the war, but the yell's first appearance in combat may have come at the First Battle of Manassas, on July 21, 1861, and is strongly associated with the Confederate general Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.

ALSO:

Rebel Yell is an established brand in the bourbon industry, operating since 1849 in Louisville, Kentucky. It has long had a reputation for releasing undistinguished whiskey, but recent efforts are at work on rebranding the image and raising the popularity of the distillery.

BUT!

**I'm nor a fan of the Confederacy, but I am of Billy Idol. See below, please.**

"I walked the world for you, babe, A thousand miles for you   I dried your tears, of pain, babe, A million times, for you I'd sell my soul, for you, babe, For money to burn, for you     I'd give you all, and have none, babe, Just to, just to, just to, just to, to have you here by me"

Billy Idol-Rebel Yell-1983

So fortunate to have what and who I have in my life. And others along the way. Teachers, all. My Bride, however is to whom I owe the most. Forty years of dedication and patience, trying to corral my times of immaturity, but I'm thankful she also sees beyond the 17 year old still trapped inside. But he's still in there, particularly in times of disbelief and anger. My own rebel yell. But now, time has crept on, and I know I must focus on other things besides being twisted inside due to our current political climate. It's unfair to drag my people down with my little boy lack of control. If it means internalizing, it's what I'll do. It's hard for me, but not impossible. I seem to be one F bomb away from burning this motherfucker down, rocking on the edge of being mentally imbalanced.

But deep down, this achieves nothing. I know this. So please send healing vibes this way. Our souls depend on it.

Thank you for stopping in.

Daily Luxuries

 08.12.2022

Sending an instant message to a loved one, possibly across the nation. Vehicle ownership. Having pets. Holding hands. A climate controlled home. Your own personal library of books. A phenomenal friend. Your own television services by choice. Internet access...in your pocket. Fresh, clean, safe drinking water on tap. Kids. Schools. Paved roads. Electrical service. Sanitary sewage solutions. Lights. Grocery stores. Traffic control. Door Dash. Infectious Disease control and assistance. College sports. Federal and State Parks. Freedom of speech.

Just a few. I expect just about anyone could make a great life with these as a beginning. So why wouldn't we extend the opportunities to others seeking the same? I know. The Honey Badger don't give a damn.

Her smile, even through her pain. Her dedication. Her humility. Her wisdom. My friend. My lover. My wife.

I'm out of juice for the day. But in closing, I want to say Happy Birthday to our son's fiance', a supernova in our lives. She's a star in a sea of stars, only brighter. The most illuminating.

Thank you for stopping by.

Civil War

 08.11.2022

"There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states."

Smell familiar? It should. I profess to be a realist. And not trying to be an alarmist. But, every day, I read opinions from the left (me) & the right (them).  The Democrats consistently win my vote. Liz Cheney & Adam Kinzinger, however, continue to give hope to me and other dems. A ray of hope that other republicans may emulate? We can only hope.

So 160 years after the beginning of the Civil War, strong feelings about it's final outcome still continue to surface. Sometimes brightly. Personally, I have seen, heard, and experienced lots of division, and it's hard to take. Living in Texas and now in Georgia has provided me with clear snapshots of the preferred ways of many. I'm thankful for my interactions and knowledge of multiple cultures, most of them provided in real time, through real experiences. My life has been enriched by all races, different cultural beliefs, but mostly of not being closed- minded.

So let's all put forth our greatest efforts to once and for all establish a solid United States. I mean united, one and all. We all need to respect one another's differences, heritage, religion, cultures, teachings.

Another Civil War is not eminent. It can't be. We've come too far. But half of our voting populous brought trump on board, so there's work to do. For the betterment of all, please vote, and vote Democrat. My sleeves are rolled up. Yours?

Today was my 30th post. It's my hope that something inside of you has been ignited. 🫂🌊

Thank you for stopping by.

Increments

 08.10.2022

Changes are inevitable. I know for me, it's rarely quick enough. So we do what we can to facilitate the changes we see as relevant. But what's relevant to me may not be for you. So we debate. The group expresses themselves. A tally is kept about agreement vs. dissention. Now the real work starts.

Cats or Dogs? Chevrolets or Fords? Crunchy or Smooth? Heinz or Del Monte? Chick-fil-a or Zaxby's? Sr. Sol or Agua Linda? Nikes or Sketchers? Lee's or Levi's? Today, we all have the ability to easily look to the internet to determine our own personal "best fits", be it the product makeup or company philosophy. Ever been so turned off by a company's philosophy that you vehemently opposed them, therefore swore them off for good?  I'm guilty.

Democrat or Republican? Ahhh, here we go. Deep seated differences, philosophies, and characters. Not usually a fan of politicians due to the whole "strength in numbers" bullshit I've seen that is so divisive, but so goes democracy. But hear me out: when EITHER party collectively votes for anything that hinders or damages the whole citizenry...like lobby money directed for pure profit... I flip the F out. Lots of that goes on, too. #insulin

Some apparent philosophies of politicians are so against my beliefs, my rage kicks in and I can't even think straight. How did the assholes get elected into office? Did you vote them in? I'll still try to respect your rights to choose, but my immediate thought is to fuck right off. I mean right off. Jim Jordan fan? Kevin McCarthy? Ted Cruz? Greg Abbott? Marjorie Taylor Greene? Matt Gaetz? Ron Desantis? Rick Scott?

Fuck.Right.Off.

I've tried, IN INCREMENTS, to wrap my head around these folks. Because they're human beings & someone's kids. But I'll be hanged if I get their twisted, selfish, uneducated, lying, hate filled stances. Matter of fact, I'm raging so bad now, I need to stop. So please say gay. And add expletives.

Thank you for stopping in.

Today's Recollections

 08.09.2022

*1959-My childhood/teen years best friend was born. More on him later.

*1854-Thoreau's "Walden" is published.

*1898-Rudolph Diesel obtains a patent for his Diesel Engine.

*1936-Jesse Owens, part of an American 4x100 relay team, sets a world record, winning Gold in the Berlin Olympics. It was one of four that he won.

*1945-Our country dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. An estimated 60,000 to 80,000 people were killed. Knee-jerk reaction much?

*1969-Manson Family commits the Tate-LaBianca murders.

*1971-Satchel Paige inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

*1995-South Africa celebrates it's first National Women's Day.

*2002-Barry Bonds hits his 600th home run.

*2016-Michael Phelps wins the men's 200m Butterfly for Gold, his 20th Gold Medal.

Of course there's more, this just a smattering of historical events. But nowhere is *Donald Lee Durham* mentioned.

There was one house between his & ours, a well worn path front & back. Early years of playing outside, sandpiles and Matchbox vehicles, hide & seek, playing at the creek, going to his farm, trikes, bicycles, minibikes, motorcycles, and finally cars. So much in between. If you've had a best friend growing up, you know what's up. Very special.

Early one morning, I got the call. He & a mutual buddy had been killed in a car wreck. Shit. He was 21. So many lives changed that day. For me, I tried to stop the pain of my loss with alcohol & drugs...for 10 years. He may be gone, but will never be forgotten.

Then, within a year of what would be the greatest loss in my lifetime, I met my new best friend. Within 9 months, we were married. My Bride of nearly 40 years was pretty sure I had a problem. Depression was never mentioned, as my times of extreme sadness was quickly resolved with beer. She never gave up on me, but the time came when I had tested her patience with my deceit about 'moderate consumption', which never really worked out. Enter AA.

Now, 43 years later after his, so many lessons learned. Never take tomorrow for granted. Never back baby into a corner. Never be afraid to ask for help. Sorely miss you, ol' buddy.

PSA: Please never, ever, hesitate to reach out for help for alcohol or drug addictions. Help is everywhere.

Thank you for stopping in.

That Simple Gateway

 08.08.2022

A kind word & a smile. BOOM. And you immediately have my attention.

A wave, a nod, taking someone's shopping cart back as you pass them in the parking lot, reaching something on a high shelf without being asked, putting something in your mailbox for your mail carrier, being polite to a sales call solicitor, thanking your fast food employee & saying "have a good day", waving someone in line when in heavy traffic, or holding the door for the person in front or behind you... it's often the little things that prompt a change in someone's day, and you just never know where that will lead. Will that moment stick with someone? It does with me. It's my hope that it does with others as well.

Multiply those tiny acts of kindness by billions. Can we even conceive of the  possible results? How about a buncha billions?

"Many a hand make light the work".

The more we think outside of ourselves in these moments and moments like them, man...I can run situations through my mind when the smallest acts have put a positive spin on an otherwise crappy day. But crappy only because I allowed something that seemed negative to me to bring me down. I've learned to displace negative things in my head with simple acts of kindness I've received. And it's worked.

Recall feel good moments. Try to cypher what stood out to make it a positive instance. Now, emulate what someone did, or remember how you felt when you offered a positive moment to someone. And in particular a stranger. Learn how to say please & thank you, ma'am & sir, yes & no, in  Spanish. Use gestures if you need to. But reach out, especially when it's obvious a person is struggling to communicate. Be welcoming to our sisters and brothers, and never, ever, assume you know their backstory.

This concludes today's thoughts on simple gateways, and how you can be the star of the show. Everybody wins.

Thank you for stopping by.

Meaning Something To Someone

 08.07.2022

To everyone. Try to make a difference in all with whom you come into contact. In the grocery store. At the home improvement center. Where you purchase fuel. At the pharmacy. To your neighbors. In traffic. At the library or bookstore (quietly). Where you work. Where you play. You know, like state parks where every camper greets every camper. At school. At the stadium on GameDay. In parking lots. At restaurants. Matter of fact, to everyone in the retail or service industry. You get it.

My bride found an intriguing movie for us last night, "Paradise Highway". It was centered around childhood abductions, and then selling kids to become sex slaves. Tough to watch, but essential in that it's more prevalent than I was aware.

Definition: Human trafficking is the practice of exploiting adults and children for use as commodities, or objects, in conditions of sexual and labor servitude. Also known as "modern slavery." Grrrrrr.

  • 24.9 million people are victims of forced labor. (ILO, 2017)
  • 4.8 million people are trafficked for forced sexual exploitation. (ILO, 2017)
  • 4.1 million people are trafficked for forced labor in state-imposed forced labor.
  • It is estimated that 20.9 million people are trafficked worldwide. (ILO, 2017)
  • Women and girls are disproportionately affected by human trafficking, accounting for 71% of all victims. (ILO, 2017)
  • Migrant workers and indigenous people are particularly vulnerable to forced labor. (ILO, 2017)
  • 3.8 million adults are trafficked for forced sexual exploitation and 1.0 million children are trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation. (ILO, 2017)

If you think, or know about someone or a group that may be a victim of modern slavery, please contact SAFEHORIZON, www.sarehorizon.org/ or your local authorities. The humane treatment of human beings isn't difficult. Trying to reach out to help and comfort another, can be. Everyone deserves at least a minimal level of dignity. Let's put an end to an age old problem centered around power and greed. Taking advantage of another human being that has not had the same opportunities as you is horrible, and inhumane. People fleeing persecution or abusive situations need help. Lift all  people. It's up to each of us to build our America the correct way, especially opposed to what we see people absorb on TV and the internet.

Is my outlook cloudy? I don't think so. And I hope you don't, either. Together, we can do so much. So let's do it.

Thank you for stopping in.

Biktarvy & Other Positives

 08.06.2022

KEEP LOVING WHO YOU ARE is what the Biktarvy commercial says. Hope provided through modern medicine. Thank you, science.

I see the differences in people, from afar through media outlets, every day. Regular people, like so many in most communities...looking out for one another, caring for family, teaching, learning, contributing for a better tomorrow. They are from different origins. They are different colors. They speak different languages. They love. They care. They're from a wide political spectrum. So why is it so difficult to understand the differences? WHY?!?

Do you try to embrace our fellow humans despite their differences? Good for you.

But what about the con artists? The homophobes? The bullies?  The dual-faced people? The privileged? The ignorant? The liars? The gullible? The victims? The preyed upon? The lawless?

It's difficult to counsel many of the people that don't want to be schooled. But not impossible.   I've never seen it happen quickly, but I have seen it happen. Reaching out to folks, no matter the differences, is an education. And the know-it-alls will always buck schooling, at least initially.

Exploit people's passions. That'll get your foot in the door. Then, like with an animal, speak and move slowly, be compassionate and attentive, and think about if this person was you. Or your kid. Everybody is someones kid. You see what you see as flaws, but are characteristics, no matter how they were arrived upon. People. I'm not like you in every way, but I have a desire to educate myself, and others as well. Please look beyond yourself to actually "see" others. A couple of examples where I challenged myself, and instantly grew...

  •      About 20 years ago, a coworker lost his son to drug related violence. Murdered. My friend's son. I went to the funeral. It was held in an African American church, and it was a packed, standing room only send-off. In the line formed to express condolences to the family, I said little. But was greeted with smiles and nods that said Thank You. When I got to my friend & his Bride, they were shocked. Already in disbelief that their son was gone, too. I knelt down, hugged him, shook his had, whispered encouragement for a new tomorrow, hugged his Bride, and moved back to my seat. At the closing of the service, I was invited to go downstairs for a meal and fellowship. I kindly declined, saying it was their family time. An elder grabbed my hands in hers, and said "Please. Your presence here today means so much." I agreed to stay and sought an empty seat in the fellowship hall. I was motioned over to the table where the elder was. She said to keep my seat, she'd bring me a plate. It was truly a moment for me. They didn't know me at all, but greeted & treated me like a human being. Just like we all do.
  • A dear friend from my K-12 years crossed my path after we'd moved to Georgia. We we're back in Texas visiting friends and family. She and a former girlfriend of mine met for supper. I had recently received new that she was gay, something that made me no nevermind. She was still the awesome person as always. And after being in the closet for a while, it was good that she was now out. And happy. Obviously relieved. But the fact that so many in our LGBTQ community have to struggle for acceptance and equality eerked me. My friend! God damnit.
Can you see the moral to these brief stories? Sure you do. "Judge not, lest ye be judged". Live it. Pass it on.

Thank y'all for stopping by.

Pro Life vs Pro Choice

 08.05.2022

The many arguments around the world are worth reviewing. I see all of it being worth our time to consider. It's been a battle for me over the years as well. My views are based on my studying this argument. It's a tough choice for me, and I can't even carry a child through a pregnancy. But so many can, and I believe it should be the women's/girls choice based on their views and/or conditions.

Shit. I've offended so many with my thoughts and viewpoints. It's never intentional. My heart is focused on ALL of us thinking about EVERYONE.

I read with great interest about foster care in our country. It's alarming the invisible numbers revealed. For lots of different reasons, some though, unbelievable. I'll never be able to conceive some reasons. Because kids. The argument that "unwanted babies can just be put up for adoption" does not hold water with me. We can't unload them like groceries from our cars. Adopting kids is expensive, and many loving, caring folks just don't have the means.

Check these stats below. If you don't think women should be able to make their own decisions, due to whatever reason(s), maybe you should consider, just CONSIDER, these.

The number of foster youth nationwide is 407,493.

216,838 children entered the US foster care system in 2020.

Eight out of 1,000 US children experience abuse or neglect.

22,971 children in foster care were in the system for five years or more.

In 2018, 22,543 kids entered the California foster care system.

20,000 children between 18 and 21 years old age out of the system yearly.

Foster care students are less likely to graduate from high school.

Only 21% of urban and 5% of rural foster youth have access to a computer at home.

Foster kids get suspended and expelled from school three times more often than other children.

One out of four foster kids show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Two scenarios:  1. Your 14 year old daughter is raped by a local gang member.  2. Your 14 year old daughter, totally in love with her boyfriend, is pregnant. Let's think outside of the box.

Thank you for stopping by.

In Times Of Covid-19

 08.04.2022

Double vaxxed. Boosted. Masking. Distancing. Wiping. Lions & Tigers & Bears, OH MY!

While our son, his fiance', & their two daughters have been with us while saving for a house of their own, we've been fortunate to have had zero issues from this unfortunate disease.

Until last Sunday.

Our son tested positive, throwing our household into a scramble to distance. And just before school started for the girls. Our rock solid daughter-in-law-to-be hasn't missed a step. Collectively, we've all been as careful, AGAIN, as we can be, and fortunately, on day 5, nobody else has tested positive. So far.

With several new strains now out there, we 6 still remain guarded as best we can. The young kids are resilient. Their parents are a little more worn. We, being the elders, remain VERY cautious. My Bride is immuno compromised, and also has to consider her helping care for her her mom, 89 in September. Challenges continue to come for everyone, but we're super thankful, and certainly realize that others aren't quite as fortunate.

Waving at neighbors is better than nothing. But the separation is difficult, particularly with the young kids. A 4 year old next door, a 2 year old across the street with his mom pregnant, a 5 year old a few doors down, and a 70+ year old across the street. The lack of interaction is palpable.

So, please mask in public. Keep an appreciable distance when in company of others. Keep disinfecting wipes handy. Wash your hands on the regular. Be well, all.

Thank you for stopping by.

Relating To Trae

 08.03.2023

Trae Crowder is an inspiration to me. A comedian that tells of a lifetime of experiences growing up in North Central Tennessee, Celina County, near the Kentucky border. And of today's shitstorms in our country. He's well studied, well read, and quick witted, like a cross between Lewis Grizzard and George Carlin. His delivery is an educated one, and he's very passionate about his topics. Look him in the eyes and you'll see & feel his no bullshit stance on politics. I've seen it, & I like it. I hang on his every word he says like I would a Rage Against The Machine song.

He grew up impoverished as a youngster, as did his family, which led him to his liberal bent. He was close to his uncle, a gay man, and never really likened his views to that of Christianity, as his experience saw no tolerance for homosexuality in the church. Thus he identifies as Agnostic.

Our "Liberal Redneck" appeals to folks like me & my mindset almost instantly. This "Hillbilly-In-Chief" easily gets my vote, and would at the ballot box.

He's quite the guy. His book, "The Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Draggin' Dixie Outta the Dark", is a must read...I mean, if you're sick & tired of being sick & tired. Trae's take is genuine, well thought out, and hits home on so many levels. He elevates me with his common sense, home style humor. If you don't already follow him on Instagram and Facebook, give him a look & listen. You don't have to be from the South to get him. And check out his YouTube videos. He's a hoot on a mission.

Thank you for stopping in.

The Olden Days

 08.02.2022

A women’s rights history moment: Helen Hulick was called to court as a burglary witness in November 1938. The 29-year-old kindergarten teacher arrived in her usual attire of a top and slacks.

But seeing slacks on a woman so greatly offended Judge Arthur S. Guerin that he would not allow Hulick to testify. Instead, he rescheduled her testimony and ordered her to wear a dress at her next appearance.

She refused. As the Nov. 10, 1938 issue of the L.A. Times reported, she stated: “You tell the judge I will stand on my rights. If he orders me to change into a dress I won’t do it. I like slacks. They’re comfortable.”

When she appeared in slacks once more, the judge chastised her for both attire and what he perceived as problems with her demeanor. “The last time you were in this court dressed as you are now and reclining on your neck on the back of your chair, you drew more attention from spectators, prisoners and court attaches than the legal business at hand,” Guerin said. “You were requested to return in garb acceptable to courtroom procedure. Today you come back dressed in pants and openly defying the court (…)

“The court hereby orders and directs you to return tomorrow in accepted dress. If you insist on wearing slacks again you will be prevented from testifying (…) But be prepared to be punished according to law for contempt of court.”

The Times quoted her response as follows: “Listen, I’ve worn slacks since I was 15. I don’t own a dress except a formal. If he wants me to appear in a formal gown that’s okay with me. I’ll come back in slacks and if he puts me in jail I hope it will help to free women forever of anti-slackism.”

Hulick returned wearing slacks, but this time, she also brought with her Attorney William Katz. Katz was armed with citations supporting her argument that she had the right to appear in the attire of her choice.

Judge Guerin held her in contempt of court nevertheless, sentencing her to five days in jail. There, she was forced to wear a denim prisoners’ dress. She was quickly released on her own recognizance, however, after her attorney declared they would be appealing the sentence.

As Hulick’s story garnered attention, hundreds of supporters sent letters of protest to the courthouse.

Finally, the Appellate Division overturned Judge Guerin’s contempt citation.

By taking this stand, Helen launched a national discussion that helped free women of “anti-slackism.”

The Bitter End

 08.1.2022

Another friend dropped by my posts yesterday. It was sad, and a particularly hard sting. He is a good hearted man, and I'll give him the benefit of my doubts by saying he may be chemically imbalanced. I'm no doctor, but I am chemically imbalanced, so I'm pretty well read on the subject.

The things he wrote were cutting to say the least. I've done my share of posting negative commentary too, but I draw a line on personal attacks. Most of the time. I insinuate my thoughts, but less graphic or colorful. Except with my brother. And only him because I know he can take it.

Yesterday was eye opening. I never saw this coming from this individual. A couple of examples:

  • Are you  Democrat? Or confused cat?
  • Can you say the word collusion?
  • Sounds like you might be lobbying for the newest job openings with Black Lives Matter.
  • I'm a Christian man with real Christian values.
  • Do you share these posts with your family?
  • The Democrats don't even like the Democrats anymore.
  • Are you ok? Are you smoking crack?
  • It's people like you that keep trouble started.
  • Do you support Warnock? A Pastor saying he is Pro Choice, it's like saying Jesus was a Nazi.
OK, this is less than half of his response to a 4 cell collage of memes I'd posted. I stand by my actions as does he, and I am fortunate that we both get to post our views. My take, however, is to take the road of John Lewis in pursuit of Good Trouble.

As with lots of things, the bitter end is rarely a good thing. Yesterday was no different. I'll nurse my wounds and continue to try and understand his point of view.

OK, I tried.

It's a no-go.

Vote Blue.🌊🫂🌊

I thank you for stopping by.
